AKTA LTD. believes in architecture that includes appropriate materials, accepts appropriate forms so they be natural to purpose, considerate of ways and means and respectful of the environment. The firm has been successful in extending this philosophy of appropriate design to residential, commercial and public architecture and architectural interiors' projects on Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Kauai, Hawaii and other regions internationally. The firm provides comprehensive design services including planning, site analysis, fiscal analysis and construction quality management services in addition to architecture and architectural interiors' design. Residential projects have included custom residences in Kailua-Kona, Pauilo and Kamuela, Hawaii; Diamond Head, Puu Panini, Waialae golf course, Waialae Iki and Hawaii Loa Ridge, Waianae Beach, Kailua Beach, Maunawili, Haliewa, Kaneohe and Lanikai, Oahu and Kula, Maui, among others.
Commercial projects have included corporate headquarters, shopping center and individual store design, medical clinics and offices, restaurant and food service facilities, hospitality projects, automobile dealership and service facilities and veterinary facilities.
Public Architecture has included public and private school design, park facilities including athletic, aquatic, marina, canoe halau, pavilion and related buildings, defense facilities, astronomical research facilities, hospital and medical clinics, theatrical and motion theatre facilities, churches, waterfront facilites and admistration buildings.
Initially, the firm began as Kimbal Thompson Associates, Ltd in 1978 and AKTA LTD. was incorporated in 1998 by founding Principal Arthur Kimbal Thompson, AIA, TF. Mr. Thompson graduated from the University of Hawaii School of Architecture and also attended the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and Division of International Education of Chapman College. He is a licensed architect in Hawaii, California and Guam and is NCARB certified. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects; a Certified Contract Interior Designer of the Governing Board for Contract Interior Design Standards; Taliesin Fellows, and other community and professional organizations. He has been in practice in Hawaii since 1978.
From that time a continuous flow of architectural services have been completed for a rich history of diverse projects including residential, scientific, medical clinics, medical office buildings, hospitals; local, federal, and international government facilities; schools, sport/recreation, retail and resort facilities for private, institutional, corporate and government clients. These projects have ranged from residential remodels to remote astronomical telescope buildings and included the design of environments appropriate to many climates, settings and missions.
